REQUEST:
To visit a Veterans Administration hospital during the
Christmas recess.
PURPOSE:
To visit hospitalized veterans during the Christmas
season to display concern and provide special
recognition to those who have served their country.
BACKGROUND:
There are two hospitals that have been recommended.
During the week before Christmas when the President
will be in Washington, the VA hospital is the
Washington Medical Center, 50 Irving St. and the
Director is Mr. Aladino Gavazzi. This hospital
opened in May, 1965 and is a 708 bed general medical
and surgical center.
During the week after Christmas when the President
will be in California, the VA hospital is the
Wadsworth Medical Center, Wilshire and Sawtelle Blvd.
Los Angeles, and the Director is Mr. William Anderson.
This hospital originally opened following the Civil War
as a soldiers' home. It now provides 1,160 hospital
beds and services 350,000 patients annually.
