Dear Dee:
It was good to hear from you and I appreciate your
concern about me. Let me say I'm very lucky and the
Lord really had his hand on my shoulder. Literally,
a sequence of minor miracles strung together to
help me have a recovery that is complete -- and even
the doctors say that it is.
To begin with, when I walked into the emergency en-
trance the entire surgical staff of George Washington
Hospital were just concluding a meeting. I had the
top medicos by my side in half a minute. Then the
bullet, which had glanced off the side of the car,
hit a rib before entering the lung which helped stop
it about one inch from my heart.
But most important, I had the prayers of a lot of
people and for that I'm most grateful.
That's enough about me and my operation. I know these
are not easy times for you. And I know words can't
be of much help. We just have to believe in God's
wisdom and mercy. You are in our prayers.
