Many well-informed people do not know
that the King's father, Don Juan de Borbon, for many
years kept drumming into his head that the grandfather,
King Alfonso XIII, was exiled because he would not co-
operate with the Socialists. The King's wife, Queen
Sofia, also reminded him thather brother, King Constantine,
was thrown out of Greece for opposing the Left. Thus,
upon assuming a throne which be was anxious to keep, the
King was perhaps chiefly responsible for the inclusion
of left-wing Socialists and Communists in the government.
The Spanish Communists are bad enough (with their specious
claims of "Eurocommunism"), but the Spanish Socialist
Workers Party, which is most likely going to win the next
election, barring a drastic change, is more dangerous by
far. It is headed by Felipe Gonzalez, a clever, ambitious
disciple of the pernicious Willy Brandt of Germany, Olof
Paume of Sweden, and Bruno Kreisky of Austria, three of
the strongest of the far-left Socialist leaders in Europe.
None of them likes the United States, NATO, or a free
economy, and they have educated Felipe Gonzalez to share
their views. Gonzalez, who is also President of the Committee
to Defend the Nicaraguan Revolution (elected unanimously at
an International Socialists meeting), has said: "I am not
a Marxist, my party is not Marxist, but we follow Marxist
principles" (as they say: "How does that grab you?").
The King listens to this man maybe a great deal more than
he should, but the U.S. media have made a hero out of the
King, (who is a pleasant, decent, innocuous man), and very
conveniently overlook his ties to the Left, and would never
bring up the obvious and understandable motives of a man
who wsnts to keep his throne, maybe without realizing the
ultimate cost to his nation and the West as a whole. Perhaps
he does not know that the Left tolerates even amiable
collaborators only until their usefulness is ended. If the
King and the country could shift gears (and it still is
barely possible despite the bad handling of the attempted
coup in February), he could be a unifying factor in a
nation that is split by the Left and the Separatists.
Maybe, after the King's visit, the Presi-
Cont and Secretary Haig would like to meet with an intelli-
gent leading Spanish politician of the Center Right, 3 was
who may soon be invited to join the Government?
If, dear Nancy, you have read this far, I
hope you haven't been bored to death by my brash and un-
solicited comments, but I am so concerned by the menace
Sanding
of Communism and its not-so-pale-pink companion, Community,
to the whole Western Alliance, that I wanted to set forth
some of my ideas and opinions. with France already prett,
much lost to the Left, and Spain maybe on the way, the
Lestern anchors of Europe are likely to be in very treacherous
sand.
