Dear President Reagan:
I heard on the morning news that you are looking into organizations
that are operated mainly by volunteers who do social service work
in their areas.
The United Board of Missions, Port Arthur, Texas, is one such group.
We have been in existance for over 12 years now and have over 400
volunteers serving our community. Our programs are varied and serve
all age groups. Among the programs we have established are:
1. Emergency Family Services: This program serves those in
need with food, clothing, rent & utility assistance, medical
& dental assistance, and transportation. We research the
needs of those who come to us and individual volunteer
counselors determine the help given. We have a Clothing
Store with clothing donated by individuals in our community.
Food is also donated by community clubs, organizations,
churches and individuals. Money for rent, utilities, etc.
is also donated by individuals and clubs locally. We are
not funded by any grant or United Fund.
2. Meals On Wheels: A local meals program, served Tuesday and
Fridays to shut-ins in our community. Funds for this program
come from our own community. Cost runs approximately $1,600
per month. Those who can are asked to pay for their own
meals. The Meals are $1.50 each. Volunteers deliver the
meals.
3. Share A Toy: A Christmas program for children, ages birth to
16 years. All volunteer. Funds for this program come from
our community. Also the community donates used toys.
4. Back To School: A program to provide good used clothing and
new shoes and school supplies. Funded by our community.
5. Hearing Aid Bank: A program that supplies used, repaired hearing
aids to those who cannot afford them.
6. Vial of Life: A program furnishing emergency medical information
for hospitals, ambulances, etc. on individuals who have medical
problems.
