Dear Mr. President!
Greetings and blessings to you this day. I am
personally grateful for your leadership and
steadfastness.
A year ago you and I spent a few minutes together
in the Oval Office talking about the work of the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes across America.
we mutually shared our concerns and the work of
FCA in the alcohol abuse area with young people.
Since our deep involvement in drug abuse over two
and one-half years ago, we have encountered some
successes but far fewer than we would desire. It
is a most difficult task.
Our work has discovered some new truths which I
believe our nation must recognize. Athletics are
no longer a part of the solution to drug use con-
cerns but rather they are now a part of the problem.
Secondly, we have discovered that America's youth are
receiving badly mixed signals from society about drug
abuse. Example: A real concern about drunken driving
but little concern for the promotion and sale of alco-
holic beverages to and for youth. The sports beer
commercials are devastating right now to youth. All
are designed with one message: if you want to be
successful and happy, drink beer.
I've attached copies of two articles which speak to the
concern. I could send literally dozens of others.
In summary, it is my feeling that we must get to the
very heart of the problem and make certain American
youth hear one ungarbled message: drug use, including
alcohol use, is dangerous and can be habit forming;
misuse and abuse will lead to only two results:
institutionalism or premature death one way or another.
