MDT,
Here's the deal with St. Senator Jeannette Hamby.
She was elected to the Oregon State Senate in 1983. Before that
she served as a State Representative.
According to Kip Hawley, she is a very liberal Republican who is
not counted upon by the Senate leadership on crucial votes.
Hamby is considered to have a special expertise in the area of
Health Care (she has a Masters' in Nursing Education) and is very
involved in women's issues.
According to the Oregon State Party Chairman, Diarmuid
O'Scannlein, she is a liberal Republican, but she is certainly
not anti-Reagan. He went so far as to say that she has generally
been supportive of the Administration. (Per Michele Davis,
'Scannlein is a conservative Republican whom she thinks is
reliable).
He said that this was the first he'd heard of the Nicaragua stuff
other than that Hamby and several other legislators had made a
trip down there. He said that Hamby's alleged discontent about
our policies in that country had not been in the local press
in Oregon. O'Scannlein suggested that someone from the White
House call Hamby directly on this -- that she was a very
straightforward person and that she would probably want to
clarify any misunderstanding which the McCarthy piece might
create.
FYI, Hamby was invited to two separate Maureen briefings and
regretted both times.
Additionally, last fall, Betty Heitman did a mailing to all GOP
women state elected officials inviting them to submit their
resumes if they were interested in being considered for a
Presidential Board or Commission (which is news to us, I
believe). Hamby responded saying that she'd be honored to be
considered for any post within the Administration. To the best
of my knowledge, she hasn't received any type of appointment.
What action would you like us to take on this one?
