3209 ANDY IRELAND 312107 RCM HAS SEEN FLORIDA OFFICES: 10TH DISTRICT, FLORIDA 120 WEST CENTRAL AVENUE P.O. Box 9447 2416 RAYSURN HOUSE OFFICE BUILDING WINTER HAVEN, FL 33883 WASHINGTON, DC 20515 (813) 299-4041 (202) 225-5015 1101 6TH AVENUE WEST PERMANENT SELECT COMMITTEE ON INTELLIGENCE P.O Box 1220 COMMITTEE ON SMALL BUSINESS BRADENTON, FL 33506 (813) 746-0766 Congress of the United States 1803 RICHMOND ROAD AT BARTOW HIGHWAY LAKELAND, FL 33803 house of Representatives (813) 687-8018 Washington, DC Feb 20515 April 17, 1985 Rd. The Honorable Ronald W. Reagan President of the United States The White House Washington, DC 20006 Dear Mr. President: You and I fully appreciate the seriousness of the threat to our national security posed by the existence of a communist dominated regime in Central America. As the Congress prepares to vote on aid to the region, the United States has become the object of a full-scale campaign to discredit those who are fighting for the freedom of Nicaragua. In an effort to dispel false impressions and to present the true picture, I hosted a town meeting in my district on Tuesday, April 9, 1985 in Palmetto, Florida to discuss the issue with my constituents. I invited Ambassador Otto Reich, U.S. Department of State, to present a review of Administration policy and objectives in regard to Central America. Both Ambassador Reich and I made brief statements detailing the broken promises of the Sandinista regime and the failure of the 1979 revolution to establish a democratic society in Nicaragua. Following our remarks, I opened up the discussion to the audience, asking them for any comments or issues they might wish to address. Rather than my attempting to describe the concerns of those present, let me offer the comments of one of those in attendance who described the event in a letter recently printed in one of our local papers. The crowded hall was surely a plus toward an informed electorate. Though somewhat dulled by an excess of facts and figures the presentation was clear, explicit and enlightening. Very truly a rare opportunity to ask explicit questions and gain insight into this vital part of our world.
