this United States Holocaust Memorial Council Office of the Chairman May 4, 1981 Files Alknd RR uply Dear Mr. President: On behalf of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, I write to express our deep appreciation for your gracious approval of our request to conduct the national Days of Remembrance commemo- ration in the White House, and for your warm and moving participation in the ceremony. Your presence at the commemoration -- so soon after the terrible injury inflicted upon you and the surgery you were compelled to undergo -- was in itself a manifestation of your commitment to the work of the Holocaust Memorial Council. But those who were honored to be at the ceremony were conscious of more than your presence. What we saw and heard was a man of eloquence, of dignity, and of humanity. Your words came so clearly from your heart, that they touched all of us in our hearts. As our nation's leader, you have our profound respect. As a man, you have earned our gratitude and our affection. Sincerely, Ehe Elie Wiesel The Honorable Ronald W. Reagan The President of the United States Washington, D.C. 20500 Suite 832, 425 13th Street, NW Washington, DC 20004 202-724-0779
