Following is information regarding the Governor's
appearance on KGO on Friday, June 11, at 11:00 a.m.
It will be a half hour interview show called
"Hello World". The format of the show is to have
some phone calls coming in to ask questions
relative to the subject to be discussed.
About 15 minutes into the program, the Governor
will receive a phone call from Senator Barry
Goldwater from Washington asking one or two
pertinent questions on the welfare situation
in California.
At the end of the program a surprise phone call
will come into the studio from someone who has
been a big influence in the Governor's life.
In this case the call will be from Congressman
H. R. Gross of Iowa. Beck and Jenkins have both
advised that the Governor should be aware of the
Gross call even though pretending surprise on
the air.
The Interviewer will be Russ Coughlin.
Producers who will meet the Governor at the
entrance will be Rufus Peterson and Sylvia
Hernandez.

per his request. He is, as you know a Deputy
Chief of Protocol for Northern California - you
appointed him to succeed Jack Hume.
Two items may be mentioned:
1) The trip to Japan. Dan has many contacts there
and has visited Japan on several occasions. If
he introduces the subject of the trip, you may
wish to refer him to Mike Deaver.
2) Meetings with Consul Generals.
We have received more requests of late for you
to meet with new consul generals. Obviously,
there just is not enough time to do this on
an individual basis. I have been in touch with
Claude Battault, French Consul General and Dean
of the Consular Corps. We have arranged a date
in September for the San Francisco Consular
Corps to honor you and Mrs. Reagan at a reception.
This will give you an opportunity to meet with
all the members at a time convenient for all.

At 11:45 a.m. today you will present two Division of
Highways employees with checks of $10,680 (minus tax
deductions) for developing a system that saved the
state $430,207 during the first year it was used.
This, I am told is the greatest first year savings
in the history of the California State Merit Awards
Program.
They are Miss Ena E. Charlton, a Senior Clerk Typist
who has been with the Highways Division for 16 years,
and John W. Devinney, an Assistant Highway Engineer,
who has been with the Highways Division for 25 years.
Together they developed a new method of preparing contract
proposals and technical documents used by the Department
of Public Works in its highway construction program.
The bulk of the savings will come from changes in printing
procedures.
In addition to these checks, the two employees are
eligible for an additional $11,000 in awards next year.
The total of $22,000 represents the difference between
10 per cent of the first year's savings accrued from
their suggestion and monies received today.
Other$ including department officials and recipient's
families will attend.
