AT ATHENS. SMITH AND TARGONTSIDIS UNAWARE OF ANY
EVENTS ASSOCIATED UNTIL ACTUAL TAKEOVER OF AIRCRAFT BY
TWO ARAB MALES IN THEIR TWENTIES, SHORTLY AFTER DEPARTURE
FROM ATHENS.
2. TARGONTSIDIS OBSERVED TWO HIJACKERS IN POSSESSION OF
TWO HAND GRENADES AND SINGLE CHROME HANDGUN. TARGONTSIDIS
ALONG WITH OTHER PASSENGERS FORCED TO REMAIN SEATED WITH
HEADS DOWN. AT SECOND LANDING AT BEIRUT, AT LEAST
SIX ADDITIONAL ARAB MALES WITH AUTOMATIC WEAPONS BOARDED
AIRCRAFT. THEREAFTER TARGONTSIDIS AND FOUR AMERICAN
MALES WERE REMOVED FROM AIRCRAFT AND TRANSPORTED TO
HOUSING COMPLEX. FOUR AMERICANS ARE RICHARD HURSBERG
(PH), VA; JEFF ENGELS (PH), USN, VA; ROBERT BROWN, BOSTON;
AND BOB LNU, TEXAS. THEY WERE DETAINED IN BASEMENT
APARTMENT UNTIL TARGONTSIDIS RELEASE ON 6/18/85.
3. TARGONTSIDIS UNAWARE OF IDENTITIES OR MODUS OPERANDI
OF HIJACKERS. HE IS UNAWARE OF STATUS OF OTHER HOSTAGES.
HE IS AWARE OF FOLLOWING DEMANDS BY SUBJECTS WHO WERE
WITH HIM DURING CONFINEMENT: RELEASE OF HOSTAGES FROM
ISRAEL; US ADMISSION TO PLACEMENT OF CAR BOMB (AT BEIRUT)
BY CIA; AND UNSPECIFIED NEGOTIATIONS WITH GREEK GOVERN-
MENT OFFICIALS.
4. TARGONTSIDIS SCHEDULED TO TRAVEL TO 187 BOYLSTON
STREET, BROCKTON, MASS, (617) 584-0838, ON 6/20/85.
5. SMITH TRAVELED WITH ROUSSOS AND THEY OCCUPIED FIRST
ROW OF AIRCRAFT. SHE OBSERVED TWO HIJACKERS ARGUING
WITH PURSER/STEWARDESS (ULI DEREKSON). EACH HIJACKER
POSSESSED HAND GRENADE. SMITH AND ROUSSOS WERE TRANS-
FERRED TO LAST ROW OF SEATS PREVIOUSLY OCCUPIED BY
HIJACKERS. ALSO PRESENT WERE ONE MAN, BROWN, AND
LATER, A STEWARDESS. SMITH OCCUPIED WINDOW SEAT; BROWN,
AISLE. BELOW SEATS IN FRONT OF SMITH AND BROWN WERE
BAGS BELONGING TO HIJACKERS: A FABRIC SHOULDER BAG IN
FRONT OF SMITH; APPARENT BRIEFCASE IN FRONT OF BROWN.
BOTH BAGS GIVEN TO HIJACKERS FOLLOWING TRANSLATED
REQUEST THROUGH PURSER.
6. SMITH BELIEVED SHE HEARD PURSER STATE THAT SOLDIER
DIRECTED TO COCKPIT WOULD BE SHOT. SMITH HEARD
PASSENGERS BEING QUERIED REGARDING JEWISH IDENTITIES
