US STRATEGY I'OR THE NEAR EAST AND
SOUTHWEST ASIA
Introduction
This National Security Stwdy Directive establishes the guide-
lines for a review of U.S. ntrategy in the Near East and
Southwest Asia. Revised policy quidelines arc necessary
which take into account recent regional diplomatic and world
oll market developments a: vell as the negotiations US
officials have conducted with regional officials since
1981. These new quidelines should form a foundation
not only for specific pol. tical decisions but also for
procurement policies, arm Transfers,
and intelligence plans.
Scope
The-NSSD will address at a minimum the following topics:
US. regional interests.
US regional objectives (to be integrated with those
established - by NSSD 1-82). including economic, political and
security goals.
- Priority of US res onal objectives.
- Assessment of the major threats to our interests
stemuning from intra- and extra-regional sources.
