J.M. MAYES
November 30th,
1921
Waltham Watch Company,
Waltham,
Massachusetts.
Gentlemen:
Attention: Mr. Ernest B. Jackson, Pur. Agent
We have your reply of November 29th and are very
much disappointed indeed to learn that it is not possible for you
at this time to reach a decision as to using our product "UNDARK"
Radium Luminous material.
The writer understood at the time of his last visit
with Mr. Jackson end Mr. Foster that the sample quentity of "UNDARK",
which we furnished, would simply be applied in production, and com-
pared as to smoothness of application, luminosity, etc. and possibly
being sent to the United States Bureau of Standards at Washington for
comparative tests with other material.
We are surprised to learn that you consider it nec-
essary to arrange special apparatus for compative tests of Radium
Luminous material, and we are wondering what you can have in mind on
this. We have at the head of our Physical Research Department, Dr.
Victor F. Hess, formerly head of the Vienna Redium Institute, & Pro-
fessor of Physics at the University of Graz, and one of the foremost
Radium physicists in the world. Dr. Hess has gathered together the
most successful and latest instruments and devices developed in several
European countries, and our electrolytical and physical laboratories
today represent by far the most complete end most modern collection of
apparatus for all sorts of measuring and testing of Redium and its By-
Products, also for testing comparative increase in luminosity and com-
parative decrease in luminosity of Radlum Luminous material.
If you desire extremely scientific tests which your
laborators 18 undoubtedly not in a position to equip themselves for,
we shall DC very glad indeed if the Waltham Watch Company would consent
to sending Mr. Foster, and anybody else they might wish to accompany
him, to our laboratories at Orange, N. J.; Dr. Hess will give to them
whatever time they may desire, and will donduct for them whatever tests
of comparison they may require.
If this cannot be arranged, and if the time at which you
can conduct whatever tests you had in mind must remain indefinite, we
will ask you to return the Radium Luminous material'which we sent to
you for testing purposes, to this office, marking the package for the
writer. We are sorry that you did not see fit to use this material in
Waltham Watch Co. - 2
regular production for various comparisons, but as you are apparently
not interested to do this, and whereas the amount of value involved is
considerable - about $100. - WE think you will not misunderstand our
accepting your offer to return the material.
The continued indication of doubt and the persistent
refusal of the Waltham Watch Company to at least make a trial of the
Radium Luminous Moterial manufactured by this Corporation, is very hard
to understand. This company was the first to produce Radium Luminous
material in this country, and ha had by far the longest experience,
lasting over a period of approximately nine years. In our reduction
plants for refining Radlum from the ore which is taken from our mining
properties in Colorado and Otah, also in our chemical and physical
laboratories, are men whose records of accomplishmentsand whose abilityes
are unquestioned, and are leaders in their subject both in Europe and
this country.
We offer you Radium Luminous material which will apply
more smoothly and which we guarantee will exceed the luminosity of the
material you are using at present, and we offer you this at a price
sufficiently lower than you are paying at present, 80 that the amount
saved would be well worth considering.
it would be easier to understand why you continue to hold
out against our proposition, even under the above conditions, if it were
not for the fact that the Elgin National Watch Company, and every other
manufacturer of watches of all grades, and also clocks, excepting only
two, are using "UNDARK" in considerable quantities. In some cases these
manufacturers are using "UNDARK" and our competitors material, and wher-
ever this is true, our product is now used in much the greater volume.
At Mr. Tyler's request, we have already submitted to
you original orders from the Elgin National Watch Company, also & letter
to you from Mr. Hatch of that organization in regard to their use of "UN-
DARK". We would be very glad indeed to do this in S.S many cases as you
might be interested to have us do it.
It is very difficult for the writer to conceive how and
why the Waltham Watch Company can continue to be influenced by competi-
tive methods which are so clearly unfair as those which have been applied
and which we have discussed together; also, in the face of every possible
favorable argument and indication it seems almost incredible.
The writer is sure that you must realize how intensely we
feel, if all the circumstances are considered and especially as our de-
sire for patronage by the Waltham Watch Company is naturally very great.
Very truly yours,
UNITED STATES RADIUM CORPORATION
CHD/J
Sales Manager.
