R. L. M. C. INTERIOR MEMORANDUM Date 3/19/24 Subject Mr. Viedt. For Attention of Answering Memo. of ORGANIZATION. I did not intend to express an impression of undue optimism in my memo. to you of the 14th. The unpleasant situation that has developed in the Application Plant has probably not been croated through the work of the Life Extension Institute. This, however, combined with our own knowledge, comments by Dr. Graham-Rogers of the New York State Department of Health, supported by Mr. Singmaster's wide experience, and Dr. Drinker's initial reaction have practically convinced me that there is no material basis for trouble. Therefore we can proceed to organize without any hesitation whatever on our part. On the other hand, the psychòlogical and hysterical situation cannot be ignored and probably offers greater difficulties than a strict scientific research. On the basis of the information we have so far in my opinion the most important action is to see Barry and perhaps others who have been making statements without knowledge and find out what the purpose is. Second, we should e reate an atmosphere in the Plant of competence. This can be best brought about by those who know, i. e. yourself, Bilstein, Doc Leman, etc. An atmosphere of confidence is just as contagious as one of alarm and doubt. Third, we will proceed with Dr. Drinker and I hope he will arrive early in April. He has had wide experience and will probably analyze and help to correct the hysterical situation either by reports or perhaps personal visits to the dentists who have jumped at conclusions apparently without thought or knowledge. Fourth, I have to-day written to Dr. Graham-Rogers for a list of the causes that might bring about the si tuation that we have. Fifth, we of course want to take all other steps that we believe will be helpful and in this group undoubtedly your suggestion of the 18th to have some X-rays made of the new operators is good. Unless you know some one else to do this, perhaps you could make arrangements with Dr. F. C. Bunn whose office is the corner of William and Hillyer Street, Orange. He has complete X-ray facilities and will probably make reasonable terms if you explain the situation. Yours truly, - A. Roeder - - ARoeder-HM
