Dr. Francis D. Donoginie,
Department of Industrial Accidents,
State House,
Boston,
Mass.
Dear Sir:-
We do not bolieve that Radium burns could occur from handling
commercial self-luminous material. Products of this lcind are handled in
small quantities and the amount of Radium contained is minute. Ordinary
commercial grades used on watches, clocks, etc. contain only a few cents
worth of Radium per watch or clock.
Radium burns occur from handling concentrated Redium salts. It
is conceivable to visualize a very large quantity of Radium Imminous Material
containing 100 Mg. or 200 Mg. or more milligrems of Radium that would cause
a burn if it were concentrated in one place and some one was held in close
contact with It for a considerable period of time. Even then the diffusion
might be too great to cause a concentrated effect. The intensity of Radium
rays diminishes inversely as the square of the distance so that for therapeutic
work highly concentrated salts are now generally packed in the smallest
possible containers and inserted directly into the tissue.
If when writing your letter of June 3 you had in mind a particular
case of Radium burn or burn of unknown origin, tre should be glad to have the
particulars.
Yours truly,
President.
