June 23, 1925. Dr. Herbert N. McCoy, 1623 Hyde Park Boulevard, AIR MAIL Chicago, Ill. Dear Dr. McCoy: I should have written to you yesterday but I guess you can visualize how busy we were here and pardon my not having done SO. Will send this along Air Mail so that you will have it tomorrow. It is not clear to us here whether the recent furore in the papers will have really as demaging effects as one might at first expect. Before the air is cleared, it will doubtless be brought out that all of the real wild statements emanated from people who know little or nothing about the subject, and I have a suspicion that the whole thing was encouraged by the other side of the law suit now pending. Under the circumstances, we shall hope to have you with us at the trial if you can arrange matters without undue inconvenience. We of course will have Barker as a Radium expert but some one who is not directly connected with the company will carry more weight, particularly one with your knowledge, experience, and reputation. It seems to me that it would be well worth while your pressing Viol pretty hard for a retraction. I doubt if he will give it because it seems almost certain that he made the statements in regard to Mesothorium. We are now expecting a drive on our luminous material customers as a follow-up, but of course have taken precautionary steps that will in all probability mullify this attempt. There is one thing certain, if any restriction is placed on the manufacture and sales of luminous compounds, it will include Radium as well as Mesotherium or any other radioactive element. If the Standard Chemical Company could see beyond a very close horizon, they would appreciate this fact. I do not feel that I am in a position to take the matter up with them direct, but think you could do so with great effect. I certainly appreciate all that you have done during the period of commotion. You are a staunch friend and I hope some time to be able to express my appreciation more aptly than I can in this letter. Cordially, President. ARoeder-HM
