Dr. Wade Wright,
Assistant Medical Director
In Charge of Industrial Hygione,
Netropoliten Life Insurance Co.,
Now York Oity.
My dear Dr. Wright:
Your letter of June 29th addressed to
Mr. Viedt at our plant in Orange, has been referred to me.
I do not believe we have available at
the present time any information along the lines that would
be helpful to you. of the large number of Doctors handling
Radium and with whom we are acquainted, M cannot recall any
who have been inadversely affected through the use of this
Element.
You are porsibly familiar with a papez
published by Dr. George Stuart Willis in the American Medical
Association Journal about two years ago. In this he reported
a serious condition that developed in either one or both of
his hands and as I recall finally resulted in the amputation
of a thunb. Dr. Willis was a Radiom thorapist handling a large
amount of work but I believe his final diagnosis of his ow case
was a result fxom his earlier work with X-Ray. Quite a bit has
been published regarding Roentgen Ulcers but no report of a simi-
lar condition esseed by Radium has appeared so fax as I
Some time ago the press was full of another
martyr to science in France. I took occasion at the time to
write to Dr. Regend of the Radiam Institute to Anquiro whother
the trouble was emsed. by Radium, as reported, and he replied that
it was a Roentgen condition.
It would be most interesting to establish what
the hasard is, if any, and during the courso of the next few months
I will endeavor to locate some data for you.
Yours truly,
President.
