December 18, 1925. Dr. F. B. Flinn, 437 West 59th Street, Columbia University, New York City. Dear Dr. Flinn:- I am herewith sending you a copy of the report of the tests made on Mrs Mallifer's bone. The final values are much higher than my first estimate, which evidently were wrong someplace. On this basis Martland's estimate was not so far wrong. I am also enclosing report on the three guinea pigs so far received. With the Beasons "reetings, I am, Yours truly, H. H. Barker. Experiemtns on the Determination of the Rate of Excretion of Radium Solutions Intravenously into Guines Pigs. Standard 5 microgram ampoules as put up by the U. S. Radium Corporation were used for the injections. Experiment 1. 15 minutes after bue injection had been made the one of the D1gs was killed and incinerated, weight of ash, 24.81 & Radium found--- 4.19, and 4.23, average 4.21 micrograms. Experiment 2. 24 hours after the injection one p1g was killed and incinerated, weight of ash, 21.39 grams. Radium found, 3.7, 3.7, and 3.8, average, 3.73 micrograms. Experiment 3. 48 hours after the injection one pis was killed and incinerated, weight of ash, 21.15 grams. Rediumsfoun Radium found, 3.00, 3.28, and 3.18, average 3.15 micrograms. It seems to me that in computing the rate of excretion we should use the quantity of radium found in the pig killed after 15 minutes after the injection rather than the theoretical quantity of 5 micrograms in the ampoule. H.H. Barker. Physical Laboratory, December 18, 1925. Sample of Bone Cortex and Marrow Taken from The Femurs of Mrs Mallifer. These samples were handed to Mr. Viedt and myself by Dr. Martland shortly after November 1, 1925. The al gauna rayactivity was measured on a sample containing weighing 60.2 grans and expressed in terms of radium equivalent. The actual radium present was determined by the emanation method. Gamma ray measurements O1 the tube containing 60.2 grams. 11/13 0018 mg. 12/4 0010 11/16 0021 12/9 0011 11/18 0014 " 12/14 .0020 11/20 0015 # 12/16 0014 average of .0015 mg. or 2.5 X 10-5 mg per gram. Assuming the total weight of the bone in the body to be 13/16 of that in Leman's body (9800 grams) and that this sample 1s repres entative of the total, we calculate the total quantity of radium equivalent contained in the body to be 199 micrograms. The smanation values determined were as follows:- 7.45 X 10⁻⁶ mg. per gram. 7.50 If " " 11 7.58 # 11 11 it 7.61 " = 14 = 7.60 If 11 = 10 7.55 11 # " a average. 13/16 X 9800 X 7.55 X 10-6 gives 60 micragrams of radium element It thus appears that about 30 percent of the total activity can be ascribed to radium while the balance or 70 percent must be ascribed to mesothorium or radiothorium.
