II.
The first indication of en exposure to radiations is generally found in the blood
picture. Among the cheages noticed are:
( I ) the rapid and profound destruction of lymphocytes, noted even with relatively
short exposure.
(2" ) the destruction of red corpuscles under prolonged exposure,
(3# ) the signs of blood destruction end lack of regeneration in the bame marrow
( 4 ) Modification of the normal relations between corpuscles and plamm resulting
in the formation of non- corpascular intravascular thrombue or fibrin formation with-
in or outside the vessels.
Mottram attention to the faot that the red colls are not RE sensitive to
radiation ne are the leucocytos and e sustained low level of the later should be con-
sidered a.z an indication of undie exposure to redistion. In fact ba places so mach
percome
and
emphasis on this feet that he recommends that prosented di. consistent white count be-
low 6000 should be removed from the exposure until the blood ham bacomo more normal.
With this kmowledge we examired the girls ix a number of factories and had sono
examined for us in England. Because of the statement that the comditions of the em-
ployees of the Orange Plant were due to thorium, we purposely only made examinatione
to
in those plants that brought their material from the Oreage Company. Thus wo svoided
from the hand
the criticiam that the girls we reported on did not have the exposure the
girls who had devoloped necrosia workad ith sue far RE the lurimous paint went. Az far
as we cknow this paint in the asone s.s. ha been used at all times. Hofmann reports that
he examined sixty girlz using radium paimt and found no indication of ill health
mindrid
mong thom. I have talked with several girla who worked in one of the plants that he
made his examination to and get the same report as to pointing the brush in the nouth.
The girle sll wore demtal films for us while othere were placed around the shop or
room in which they worked. The films on being develoned showed that they had the same
attack
exposure as the girls in the Orange Plant. We are inclined not to place much importance
