Y.\nIFN\nStates\nDear Mr. Roeder:\nIntion\nIn a recent issue of the magazine section of the Hearst News-\npapers there appeared a sensational two-page article, under\n\"scare headlines\" telling of the dire results happening to some\nof the girls working in your factory.\nIn this article the writer explained how the girls got poisoned\nby radium thru moistening the brushes containing the radium\nsalts on their tongues, etc.\nPersonally, my dear Mr. Roeder, I don't believe the thing ever\nhappened as described in the newspaper article, firstly, because\nthe adhesive, with which the salts are mixed, would be too\nsticky and distasteful for any refined young lady to acquire\nthe habit of continuously licking the brush, secondly, because\nI have had over twenty years' experience in handling radium and\nits various salts in both highly concentrated and modified\nforms, without any physical ill effects whatever, and thirdly,\nwe have girls working in our factory, some of whom have been\nworking for us for over eight years. These girls are continu-\nously handling radium salts in a far more highly concentrated\nform than that used in your \"Undark Material\" and they are a\nremarkably healthy lot in every way.\nMy reason for writing you this letter is to get an expression\nfrom you which will be of value in explaining the matter from\nyour viewpoint.\nThanking you in advance for this favor and assuring you of\nhearty cooperation on our part in combatting any adverse pub-\nlicity, I remain\nSincerely yours,\nRADIUM APPLIANCE COMPANY\nMLD: FGD\nTechnical M.L.Degnen Director"
