Subject: Precautionary Measures Necessary in Connection
with the Use of Radium Luminous Material.
Gentlemen:
A newspaper account which has recently been
brought to the Bureau's attention describes certain
cases of infection attributed to carelessness in con-
nection with the use of radium luminous material for
painting dials of watches. This account states that
the infection was caused by persons employed in paint-
ing watch dials placing the brushes containing radium
luminous material in their mouths.
The Bureau purchases considerable quantities
of similar material, which is used at various Navy Yards
for coating dials of clocks and various navigational
instruments. As it is desired to avoid serious infections
and fatalities such as described in the account referred
to, the Bureau would appreciate information as to your
experience in this connection and as to any precautionary
measures which you have found necessary to avoid such
infection.
Respectfully
appears, Consuruction Corps, 9.
