Dear Mr Roder:
I am wondering if your crowd have given up all idea of giving me a lump
sum for further radium reaearch? I am planning my work for the coming year and if
you have decided that you are not going to do anything I will dispose of the animals
I now am keeping.
Since Miss Dunn has been under my observation, I felt that I ought to carry
on some more work. She has a combination of conditions and I am sure her trouble was
not due to radium but nevertheless the fact remains that she has about one hundred
micrograms of radium in her system and pieces of her jaw bone are active. I want to
fill the teeth of a group of dogs with your material and then let them live for a number
of years taking frequent X-ray pictures and compare them with a normal group. This
would be the final answer to the question, tho of course you are through with your legal
side. The following extract of a letter that I just received may interest you.
" He has been using a radio-active material as the cement and root filler for ap-
proximately a. year with no bad reports. He has not made a scientific check of these
results. To do this, it will be necessary to bring in the patients and make a check on
each one by x-ray and objective symptoms. In the cases where he has used the paste or
root canal filler, the nerve has been exposed or relatively so and the tooth was aching.
Immediately after applying the paste, all discomfort disappeared and no bad results
have been reported. W realize that possibly not sufficient time has slapsed for him
to determine whether there is to be any bad after effects."
T is paste is a mixture of zinc sulphide and radium.
I estimate I can carry on this research if I can get 8. lymp sum of $2000.00
it will see me through all that I want to do.
Yours truly
