Mr. E. A. Markley,
Collins & Corbin,
1 Exchange Place,
Jersey City.
Dear Mr. Markley:
This will acknowledge receipt of your letter
of January 3rd, enclosing copy of report, dated December 19,1927,
made by Dectors Douglas Symmer and Benjamin Schwarts, relative
to autopsy preformed on the body of Amelia Magria under date of
October 15,1927.
We are not well versed as to what an expert
medical report should contain, but it strikes us that if we were
specially interested in ascertaining definitely what the autopsy
revealed it would seem that our Doctors have not succeeded in
pursuing a sufficiently thorouch course. For instence the summary
on radio-active substances, took Dr. Gettler's word for the
statement that an "electroscopic examination of the bones showed
radio-active substance in excessive quantities". This may mean mobh,
or may mean little, depending on whether any given amounts of radio-
activity may be considered excessivo.
We do know that Dr. Flinn and our Mr. Barker have
already made two (2) readings on the specimen left with Dr. Flinn,
for the purpose of making a quantitative determination. There is
still one more reading to be made before the given amount of radium
in the body of Miss Maggia can be finally determined. This is not
said in any spirit of criticism of Drs. Symmer or Schwartz, but
merely indicates that if a quantitative determination is desirable
there is still forther work to be done.
We have never seen a copy of the report furnished
to Mr. Berry by his experts, and would much appreciate your sending
us a copy, if such is available. It might be helpful for us to
review their findings in the light of our familiarity with radio-
active substances.
Very truly yours,
CBLee:RH
President.
