TREASURY DEPARTMENT
BUREAU OF
THE PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE
IN REPLYING
ADDRESS THE SURGEON GENERAL
U.S. PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE
WASHINGTON
AND REFER TO
January 12, 1928.
Mr. H. H. Barker, Vice President,
United States Radium Corporation,
535 Pearl St.,
New York, N.Y.
Dear Mr. Barker:
Your letter under date of January 10, 1928, has been received.
With regard to this matter allow me to say that after the publica-
tion of my article in 1923, I kept in fairly close touch with the
group at the U. S. Bureau of Standards who were measuring radium,
but for the past several months I have not been in very close con-
tact with them. The data I have consists mostly of blood counts
over a period of three or four years, of a small group of persons
who were engaged in handling radium at the Bureau of Standards.
At first this group was ten or twelve, but it has finally dwindled
down to three or four people.
Due to pressure of work, I have not been able to write up
this data in the form of an article. I do not know that it will
show anything of particular interest except for the fact that one
or two of the persons who have been handling radium for a number
of years appear to show no ill effects whatever.
Should there be anything further I can do in this matter to
assist you, I should be glad to do SO. In case you care to have
anyone come to Washington to look over the data which I have, I
would be glad to place it at their disposal. However, as I have
indicated above, I doubt that there is very much in it that will
be of material assistance.
Assuring you that I will be glad to cooperate with you in
this matter, I am
Very truly yours,
R.C.Williains R,
RCW: MMcC
Assistant Surgeon General.
