H. H. Barker, Vice-President, United States Radium Corporation, 535 Pearl Street, New York City. RADIU Dear Mr. Barker: MATERIAL The attendant publicity given the so-called "radium poisoning" cases which have occured at your plants has seriously injured the radium products business throughout the country. I un- derstand, however, that you have made or are making a cash settle- ment with all or part of the girls affected, and I am wondering if in such settlement you cannot make some provision that will make the settlement contingent upon a cessation of further publicity. Anything which injures the business of the radium products dealers throughout the country injures your business as well, and while IN realize that our own radium purchases are not so very large at the present time, we never-the-less have some good contracts under consideration which would increase our purchases from you materially we hope. I, myself, am strongly of the opinion that the dis- ease is a "zinc poisong" and not a"radium poisoning", since radium even though used in very large amounts in intra-venous injections has been almost universally successful with never a case of this kind occuring. If you have any evidence to show that it is not radium poisoning but zinc poisoning or someother kind of poisoning, it would be a great. help to us as well as other concerns engaged in a similar line of business to give such evidence some newspaper publicity. We have been disappointed that so far we have found practically nothing in the papers to give your side of the case. I would like to have all possible information you can give me regarding these cases, and I would appreciate it very much if you could keep me informed as to any new developments as they come up. It will be greatly appreciate if you will let me hear from you by return mail. RFH/E R.F. Sincerely Harmer yours, P. S. In giving me the information requested above, I hope you will tell me if there is any part of it, which I cannot make public.
