Barker, Vice-President,\nUnited States Radium Corporation,\n535 Pearl Street,\nNew York City.\nRADIU\nDear Mr. Barker:\nMATERIAL\nThe attendant publicity given the so-called \"radium\npoisoning\" cases which have occured at your plants has seriously\ninjured the radium products business throughout the country. I un-\nderstand, however, that you have made or are making a cash settle-\nment with all or part of the girls affected, and I am wondering if\nin such settlement you cannot make some provision that will make\nthe settlement contingent upon a cessation of further publicity.\nAnything which injures the business of the radium products dealers\nthroughout the country injures your business as well, and while\nIN realize that our own radium purchases are not so very large at\nthe present time, we never-the-less have some good contracts under\nconsideration which would increase our purchases from you materially\nwe hope.\nI, myself, am strongly of the opinion that the dis-\nease is a \"zinc poisong\" and not a\"radium poisoning\", since radium\neven though used in very large amounts in intra-venous injections has\nbeen almost universally successful with never a case of this kind\noccuring. If you have any evidence to show that it is not radium\npoisoning but zinc poisoning or someother kind of poisoning, it would\nbe a great. help to us as well as other concerns engaged in a similar\nline of business to give such evidence some newspaper publicity. We\nhave been disappointed that so far we have found practically nothing\nin the papers to give your side of the case.\nI would like to have all possible information you can\ngive me regarding these cases, and I would appreciate it very much if\nyou could keep me informed as to any new developments as they come\nup.\nIt will be greatly appreciate if you will let me hear\nfrom you by return mail.\nRFH/E\nR.F.\nSincerely Harmer yours,\nP.
