R: dium Concern to Pay Huge Sum to Five Factory, Girls NEWARK, N. J., June 5.-(U.P.)- The settlement made by five women who sued the United States Radium corporation for $1,250,000 will assure them incomes larger than they ever made as employes of the organiza- tion, their counsel said today. One thousand dollars a year was the maximum salary paid the women when they moistened brushes with their mouths and painted watch dials with a radio-active substance in the radium company's plant at Orange, N. J. In doing that work they contracted a poisoning which probably will kill them within a year. Under the settlement, each woman received $10,000 outright, $2,000 for past medical expenses, a pension of $600 a year to cover further medical expenses and counsel fees aggregat- ing $19,500.
