June i0, 1928 U. S. Radium Corp. JUN 22 1928 Orange, New Jersey Gentlemen; LEUUS Am engaged in selling RADIUM ORE DISCS to be placed in drinking water, as a health measure, and my work has been much hindered by articles published in the News papers, similar to the enclosed clipping. Am at a loss to know in what form the Radium (if indeed it was Radium) was used, to do so much harm; or with what other substancee it was mixed, -etc. as to be so poisonous. Was not Phosphorus-really the substance used for illuminating purposes? Was any Radium used at all,- or was"Radium 11 simply the name used for the Plant ? Until I can know something more about the facts of the case I cannot explain the situation satisfactorally to my Clients and prospective Customers, who, many of them, have now become afraid to drink Radio-active water, (since reading the encl osed) Please send explanation in encloded seff addressed envelope- and I shall be very grateful for the favor. Very Truly Yours H. Mead 8457 San Juan Ave. Southgate, California. Radium Concern to Pay Huge Sum to Five Factory. Girls NEWARK, N. J., June 5.-(U.P)- The settlement made by five women who sued the United States Radium corporation for $1,250,000 will assure them incomes larger than they ever made as employes of the organiza- tion, their counsel said today. One thousand dollars a year was the maximum salary paid the women when they moistened brushes with their mouths and painted watch dials with a radio-active substance in the radium company's plant at Orange, N. J. In doing that work they contracted a poisoning which probably will kill them within a year. Under the settlement, each woman received $10,000 outright, $2,000 for past medical expenses, a pension of $600 a year to cover further medical expenses and counsel fees aggregat- ing $19,500.
