H. Mead, Esq.,

Southgate, Calif.
Dear Sir:
In reply to your letter of June 10th, we are glad to give you
such information as we believe may help to selve your problem.
The material used in our plant for applying to watch and clock
dials is light andalpha ray sensitive zinc sulphide. This material con-
tained no phosphorus, but dédscontain a varying amount of radio-active
materials for sensitization.
We do not believe that this situation is in any way comparable
to the use of the common radio-active drinking waters. In the first
place such waters contain only very small amounts of radio-active materials,
and secondly these radio-active materials are necessarily the gaseous
disintegration product of radium, namely - radon, which is short lived.
We are not in a position to recognize that the cases which have
been given so much publicity are legitimate ones. These cases were founded
by building public opinion from a humanitarian aspect, rather than on their
merits. There is to be created a medical Board to study these particular
girls, and it is our hope that this Board will eventually charify the
situation as to whether these girls are or have been suffering as a result
of their employment.
Very truly yours,
Vice President.
