September 5th,
Mr. H. H. Barker
2.

The Hamburg Americanische Watch Company use mesothorium as well as radium.
This is the only company concerning which they have definite information as regards
mesothorium.
They stated that none of the above companies have experienced any trouble
or sickness with any of their employes at any time which could be remotely traced to
the radium paint. The gentlemen I interviewed stated emphatically that the cases in
America were the first that they ever heard of where the health of the employes was
claimed to be effected by radium paint.
In the Gebruder Junghaus plant they have had girls for a period of ten to
fiftenn years with absolutely no injury whatever. This statement was made in one of
the letters which I saw. The Hamburg Americanische Company is apparently a small
company and their last report as regards the length of time their employes had been
with them is as follows:
1 girl - 4 years
1 girl - 3 years
2 girls - years
2 girls - 2 years
5 girls - 1 year
3 girls - the year
This, of course, refers to the present employes but does not mean that they have not
had others who have been with them just as long but who have left. The factory manager
of the Gebruder Junghaus Company has been with the organization fifteen years.
The gentlemen I interviewed did not know for certain whether brushes were
or were not used in all the plants mentioned but agreed to find out and let me know
later.
Whilst I was in Brussels I interviewed Mr. Lechien, General Manager of the
Belgian Radium Company. I asked him concerning poisoning cases and he stated that he
had never heard of anything of the kind in Europe and was quite sure that none of the
companies had had any trouble. He did state, however, that as far as he knew brushes
were
not
used. The usual means of applying the paint being through a small cornucopia
of paper with a tiny opening.
The above information is not very detailed because there appears to be
nothing to report of a positive nature. I gave information to both Mr. Lechien and to
the men in Germany concerning the real facts of the suit in this country.
Very sincerely yours,
RBM* JR
