ESTABLISHED 1824 THE E.INGRAHAM COMPANY MANUFACTURERS OF CLOCKS AND WATCHES BRISTOL, CONN. U.S.A. December 6th, 1928. Dr. Henry F. Stoll, 179 Allyn Street, Hartford, Conn. Dear Dr. Stoll:- The writer had a talk yesterday with Messrs. Lee and Barber of the United States Radium Corp. who have had a great deal of experience with radium poisoning. I read them the statement from your letter that "it is the radium laden air that is inhaled rather than the small amount on the brush that causes the trouble". They feel certain that this does not maintain where the application is done by brush. They state that radium is free emanating and produces a gas known as radon, but that when radium is combined with a gas absorbing material, such as zinc sulphite which is used in the production of radium luminous paint, the percentage of gas thrown off is so infinitestimal that it is impossible to become affected by it. They do state that if dials were dusted it would be possible for the air to become dust laden, in which case the material could be taken in through the air. They also advise that there has never yet been a case of illness from radium poisoning where the presence of radium could not be proven by the electroscope test and that all serious cases had revealed at least 60 to 100 micrograms. Furthermore the electroscope will detect as small as two micrograms and no positive action at all has been found in the electroscope test on the girls employed by us, or on Miss Dube in particular. As a matter WE SELL THE WHOLESALE TRADE ONLY ESTABLISHED 1824 THE E.INGRAHAM COMPANY MANUFACTURERS OF CLOCKS AND WATCHES BRISTOL, CONN. U.S.A. Dr. Henry F. Stoll 2. of interest, they have known as high as 3,000 micrograms being injected into the human system for experimental purposes and 200 micrograms is frequently used at the Mayo clinic. We intend to follow up Miss Dube's case further on this particular item by having an exposed air test and a gamma ray test made so as to check the possibility of poisoning through the air. We thought all the above would interest you even though it is perhaps apart from the case you have been handling for us. We wrote you November 30th asking if you could favor us with a report on Miss Dube for our own records and also to enable us to forward a copy to Dr. Frederick B. Flinn, who as we explained was the party who requested that we put her under expert medical care. We would be pleased if report could be forwarded shortly. With best regards, we are Very truly yours, THE E. INGRAHAM COMPANY DSI:B By WE SELL THE WHOLESALE TRADE ONLY
