Barker,\n535 Pearl Street,\nNew York City, New York.\nDEG 261928\nDear Mr. Barker:\nIn reply to your letter of the 18th, it seems\nthat I have failed to make myself clear.\nI have never maintained the attitude that these\ngirls were not injured by luminous paint. Neither has it\nbeen in our mind that you should make any statement to the\npublic absolutely denying the charges that your Company was\nresponsible for their condition, but after reading the re-\nport in the A. M. A. Journal of December 5, 1925, which\narticle was the basis for the denial, it soems to me that\nyou could concienciously make the statement that Radium,\nof itself, was not to blame.\nDr. Martland is quoted as saying that \"These\nradioactive salts are chiefly insoluble salts. If they\nwere soluble they would be eliminated from the body withe\nout difficulty but instead they forn on bones and can-\nnot be removed\".\nThe statement has been made numerous times that\nradioactive substances are dangerous but that statement does\nnot necessarily imply that because a substance is radioactive\nthat it actually contains radium. Consequently, it seems to\nme that a statement could be made by your firm that Radium,\nof itself, is in no way to blame for these conditions. Even\nDr. Hoffman in his article in the A. M. A. Journal of Sept.\n26, 1925, gives you plenty of leeway to be able to make such\na statement and especially could it be made in reference to\nsoluble radium, which all physicians, who know anything about\nit, are agreed upon the fact of its elimination from the body\nwhen administered internally or intravenously.\nIn reference to the public being able to dif-\nferentiate, you would be surprised how readily the general\npublic accept statements made to them as to the difference\nand now since these five girls have lived longer than the\npublic had any idea they would live before settlement was\nmade, no doubt, the early newspaper reports will be dis-\ncounted and a statement from you would be given much more\ncredit than it would if made at a much earlier date."
