Dear Dr. Schlundt:
Your letter of December 24th, with
bill attached for expense account for trip to Washington
arrived today, and we are herewith forwarding check to cover.
I have had occasion during the last day
or 30 to look up the work by Siel, Viol & Gordon, and believe
that you will find the data regarding this work extremely
interesting in view of the experiments which you have recently
been conducting. The reference is "Radium 5; 40-41, May 1915".
They have conducted experiments with radium taken orally as
well a.s intravenously, and there is no reason why your results
should not check with those recorded. The only point at
issue in my mind is their assumption regarding the rate of
elimination after 10 days. You will note that their data
ends at this period, and they have reported no radium deter-
mination after that time. In view of the rather large
quantity which they used, their mork would have been much
more valuable had they continued the experiments for a matter
of months.
I sent the tube containing 1.1 milligrams
of radium element to Dr. Flinn last week, and while talking
with him today he stated that it had been received, and that
he was today making the deterninations requested. He will
return the tube directly to you, as well as sending the data
obtained.
Dr. Flinn feels very good over the outcome
of the conference in Washington, as he feels that his position
has been more or less substantiated. Dr. Martland has
come
around to Dr. Flinn's way of thinking on a number of points
at issue - namely, the distribution of radium throughout the
system; possibility of the five girls in question, living a
normal life, if not recovering their normal health; belief
that with the elimination of pointing the brushes with the
lips the hazard will be nil, etc. Dr. Martland and Dr. .Flinn
returned on the same train, and Dr. Martland was disposed
to be quite friendly with Dr. Flinn.
It seems to me that this conference may result
in a more nutual understanding among all, and perhaps better
