Barker,\n535 Pearl Street,\nNew York City, New York.\n1/78/99\nDear Mr. Barker:\nEnclosed please find check in the amount of $75.00\n5497/19\nfor which please send us sixty 10 microgram ampules and\ncredit my account with the balance, and oblige.\nI have a friend who is employed by the United Press\nthat was in to see me a few days ago to discuss the effect of\nthe unfavorable publicity on our radium business and he is\ninclined to the belief that if you were inclined to do so,\nthat arrangements could be made so that publicity that would\novercome the present handicap and work it into an asset could\nbe secured.\nThe information would be furnished, of course, by\nyou indirectly so that it would not appear 8.S coming from your\nCompany.\nHe feels as I do, that there has been 8. gross in-\njustice done to radium and he is relying upon the fact that the\nAmerican people are a sport loving people and, therefore, be\nlieve in fair play.\nIt will not be long now until the anniversary of\nthe payment of this money to the girls and, no doubt, there\nwill be a continuation of unfavorable publicity at that time\nunless something is done to counteract it. I feel sure\ngreat good could be accomplished through this connection\nfrom our standpoint, as distributors of a non-deleterious\ntherapeutic agent that has proven its value in hundreds of\ncases.\nIt is almost impossible to secure finance to\nput over 8. deal with so much to overcome and I do not feel\njustified in my own mind in jeopardizing peoples money on a\nradium jar deal with the present existing conditions.\nOne of those girls has just gone to a hospital,\nsupposedly to die. Since the middle of December Mrs.\nMacDonald is becoming paralyzed and no doubt we can expect to\nread of the death of these girls anytime, with the usual\namount of publicity condeming radium. If there is some effort\nmade to combat this through legitimate channels and thereby,\nclear the name of Radium, I would be willing to cooperate and\nrender any assistance possible. Barker, No.2.\nWe are getting a small repeat business among our\nphysicians but it is not producing sufficient income for me to\neat, let alone pay rent and other actual office expense, and\nI won't ask other people to put money into 8. deal in view of\nwhat has happened to date and what is still hanging over us.\nI do not expect to walk away from what has been\naccomplished to date but I know that I can spend & large part\nof my time more profitably along other lines and from that\nincome will reduce my present indebtedness to you as rapidly\nas possible.\nVery truly yours,\nH.
