Dear Mr. Barker:
Enclosed please find check in the amount of $75.00
5497/19
for which please send us sixty 10 microgram ampules and
credit my account with the balance, and oblige.
I have a friend who is employed by the United Press
that was in to see me a few days ago to discuss the effect of
the unfavorable publicity on our radium business and he is
inclined to the belief that if you were inclined to do so,
that arrangements could be made so that publicity that would
overcome the present handicap and work it into an asset could
be secured.
The information would be furnished, of course, by
you indirectly so that it would not appear 8.S coming from your
Company.
He feels as I do, that there has been 8. gross in-
justice done to radium and he is relying upon the fact that the
American people are a sport loving people and, therefore, be
lieve in fair play.
It will not be long now until the anniversary of
the payment of this money to the girls and, no doubt, there
will be a continuation of unfavorable publicity at that time
unless something is done to counteract it. I feel sure
great good could be accomplished through this connection
from our standpoint, as distributors of a non-deleterious
therapeutic agent that has proven its value in hundreds of
cases.
It is almost impossible to secure finance to
put over 8. deal with so much to overcome and I do not feel
justified in my own mind in jeopardizing peoples money on a
radium jar deal with the present existing conditions.
One of those girls has just gone to a hospital,
supposedly to die. Since the middle of December Mrs.
MacDonald is becoming paralyzed and no doubt we can expect to
read of the death of these girls anytime, with the usual
amount of publicity condeming radium. If there is some effort
made to combat this through legitimate channels and thereby,
clear the name of Radium, I would be willing to cooperate and
render any assistance possible. Otherwise, I see no possibility
of making money (in spite of the foundation that has been laide from

Mr. H. H. Barker, No.2.
We are getting a small repeat business among our
physicians but it is not producing sufficient income for me to
eat, let alone pay rent and other actual office expense, and
I won't ask other people to put money into 8. deal in view of
what has happened to date and what is still hanging over us.
I do not expect to walk away from what has been
accomplished to date but I know that I can spend & large part
of my time more profitably along other lines and from that
income will reduce my present indebtedness to you as rapidly
as possible.
Very truly yours,
H. M. Armstrong
