January 29th, 1929. Mr.H. M. Armstrong, The Radium Extension Service, 185 N. Wabash Ave., Chicago, Ill. Dear Mr. Armstrong: Your order for 60 -- 10 microgram ampoules went forward yesterday. Your connection with an employee of the United Press, who feel that he is in a position to give radium favorable publicity, is of interest. However, upon careful analysis of the situation we don't believe our position has altered materially from that advised you in the past. There is no way of stopping the publicity which is go ng to result from the the conditions of the five cases, as they progress. The general public's curiosity has been thoroughly aroused relative to these girls, and inasmuch as the press is anxious for news of general interest they are naturally going to follow these cases quite closely. We have three additional suits pending at the present time the course of which we cannot fortell at the moment. You may rest assured that we are handling these matters in a manner which we consider most expeditious from the standpoint of the general distribution of radium. There is no question but what all of this publicity has very materially effected the internal use of radium, and while we are extremely sorry about this situation, still we don't feel that at the moment we would be justified in actively endeavoring to counter- act same without being able to back such propaganda up by clinical evidence. There is nothing to be gained by the mere exchange of words and ideas or speculations relative to this entire situation. We must all admit that this is a pioneer field and that we are not equipped with as much definite knowledge as we would like to be. As soon as you open up a publicity campaign it merely gives the opponents an opportunity to fire back at you, and personally I cannot see where there is one single thing to be gained by such a procedure. We believe that by maintaining a conservative policy, and putting forth our earnest endeavors to bring forth all the possible facts connected with this situation, that in time the matter will clarify itself, and the opinion of the general public will be put to rights. We realize that our position in this matter may seem a little hard from your standpoint at times, but after all we Page -2- must all make sacrifices for the benefit of the industry as a whole. Let us assure you that we have explicit confidence in your honesty and methods of doing business, and that we stand ready at all times to assist you in every way consistent with good business principles. Very truly yours, Vice President. HHBarker:RH
