Dr. Jemes E. Ives,
United States Public Health Service,
Office of Industrial Hygiene & Sanitation,
Washington, D. C.
Dear Dr. Ives:
Professor Schlundt advised ne of his conversation
with you relative to loaning you the use of our Wulf quartz fiber
electroscope.
As Dr. Schlundt probably told you we placed an
order last fall for an additional instrument, which we anticipated
would be in our possession by this time - however, we have not
received work to date from the maker, Gunther & Tegatmeyer, of
Brunschweig, Germany, as to when shipment will be made. We are
getting off a week-end letter to Gunther & Tegatmeyer to ascertain
when we may expect this instrument.
We hesitate to allow the instrument which is now
in the possession of Dr. Flinn to go out of New York for two reasons:
First we are, as you know, involved in litigation, and only this week
it has been necessary for us to use this equipment in testing sone of
the complainants of this action. Wehave an order from the Court
granting us the privilege of examining an additional complainant, but
as yet & day has not been set when such examination can be made, and
it is quite probable that we would not have sufficient notice to have
the instrument returned to New York in time for this examination -
Secondly, Dr. Flinn has been examining those that have been employed
in the application of luminous material to watch dials in New York
state, and as yet his examination has not been completed. He has
several people still to be examined and hopes to do this at such time
as it is convenient to have these people call at his office. By not
having an instrument available you can apprediate that he would be
materially handicapped.
We are very anxious to put this instrument at your
disposal, for we feel that it is an instrument which can be relied
upon, while a good many of the more common types of gamma ray
electrometers could not.
We are in hopes to hear from Gunther &
Tegatmeyer that the instrument ordered last September has been shipped,
and should be in our possession shortly, and we wish to assure you that
we would be pleased to put this instrument at your disposal immediately
upon its arrival.
