UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY March 25, 1929 Mr. H. H. Barker United States Radium Cornoration 535 Pearl Street New York My dear Howard: We are enclosing herewith a copy of the report which we are sending both to Mr. Smith and Mr. Markley on the subject: tests for radioactivity, Mrs. Canfield. I began yesterday to make some measurements by the film method for the activity of the ash residues of the excreta of Mrs. Hussman and Miss Fryer. I have weighed up all the samples and have then all ready now for measurements. For this purpose, we have had built an entire new ionization chamber and also have a new Lind head and this combination certainly functions effectively, the natural drift being only about 0.002 div sec. It is, of course, too early to give any results, but I can say this much that the residues of Miss Fryer are more active than the Hussman residues, but the activity of Miss Fryer's residues are quite low. 91 shall make some experiments to determine whether these anamalous effects which we observed with the Wulf electroscope may be atributed to cosmic rays. Have you had a little time to calábrate the ionization chambers Nos. 6 and 7? If the cormission should happen to ask you why I am not a little more prompt about reporting some results for the ash residues of excreta, please explain to them that the sex questionnaire here at the University has resulted in the dismissal of two professors and I am afraid that this action of the Executive Board has met with considerable opposition in the faculty. We hope that some way may be found whereby the ousted members will be reinstated. I feel that it is necessary for me to take an active part in this movement, consequently, there will be some delay. With very kind regards, I remain Sincerely yours, Herman Schlundt Herman Schlundt HS:RO Enc. 1
