DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
Mr. H. H. Barker, Vice-President
United States Radium Corporation
535 Pearl Street
New York, N. Y.
My dear Howard:
There are several things about which I would like to say a few words at this
time. In the first place, I want to thank you for your very generous offer to ad-
vance me some money which the two insurance companies owe. I shall be glad to re-
imburse your firm when I receive payment for the insurance companies. Let me suggest
that we arrange it on the following basis: I am most concerned with the money that
was actually paid out for traveling expenses. In looking up the bill, I find that
this total amount for the two trips to New York was $214.30. Suppose we throw off
the thirty cents (.30) which will leave $214, and since you have already advanced me
$60, the balance would be $154, and with this amount in hand, I shall be in good post
ition to carry out my summer plans which I outlined briefly in my former letter to
you. Perhaps, it would simplify matters for you to advance me the $214, then when
the money comes to you, take out the $60 which I owe you and send on to me the bal-
ance of $154.
I don't know whether the reprints had arrived when I wrote you about a week ago,
but the package has now come to hand and I have read over again the paper and it
seems to me it covers most of the important points. It seems to me that we now have
in hand sufficient data to publish a second paper incorporating the rate of elimi-
nation of radium in the excreta. We could include wi th the data on Miss Fryer and
Mrs. Hussman the determinations made on the excreta of Mrs. Dunschott and those of
yours on Miss Dunn. Doubtless the question of publication of these results should be
taken up with the Committee, unless you feel that the Committee simply cooperated with
us in carrying forward our experiments. The expense of the experiments, I understand,
was borne entirely by your company. Shall I proceed to write up these results with
a view of publication.
Fully two weeks have now elapsed since I wrote to Dr. Flinn, reminding him of
the desirability of calibrating the garma ray instrument by means of the standar d
ampules which you have supplied. Thus far I have received no reply so I assume he
is still engaged in completing the experiments.
Probably your attention has already been drawn to the July number of the Popular
Science Monthly. The first article in this issue features the five radium cases.
Some hope is expressed of their ultimate recovery upon the basis of the radioactive
deposits consist largely of mesothorium instead of radium.
mg
I assume that either you or Dr. Flinn will supply members of the Committee and
also Dr. Failla with copies of our paper. We must not forget Dr. Martland. I am
sending copies to Dr. Moore and Dr. Lind, and the rest of my distribution wf 11 be
largely to local friends who are interested in this investigation. I hope you wi 11
also supply Dr. Thompson of the United States Public Health Service and his Associate
Dr. Ives, and please do not forget Mrs. Hughes and I assume that the watch companies
2/Barker
will be interested.
In one of your letters you mentioned that Dr. Flinn was working on a
new therapy for eliminating radium. I wonder whether this might not be
following up a suggestion I made to him last summer, to administer
small quantities of barium salt, either the chloride or the sulphate. He
at
had once objected to this suggestion because barium was regarded as toxic,
but I reminded him of the fact that barium sulphate is given internally when
X Ray pictures are takn of the stomach and elementary canal. It would
certainly be interesting to examine for radioactivity one or two of Mr.
Bailey 's steady customers.
Please do not let anything interefere with your proposed trip. You will
get quite a thrill out of the adventure.
How is the mesothorium market?
With very good wishes, I remain
Sincerely yours,
Herman Schlundt
