Y.\nMy dear Howard:\nI wish to thank you first of all for the check of one hundred and fifty dollars\n($150.00). I understand that this is a private transaction between the United States\nRadium Corporation and myself, and moreover, when settlement is made with the insur-\nance companies, I shall then reimburse your company to the extent of two hundred and\nten dollars ($210.00). I trust that this simple statement of the situation will suf-\nfice as a record of the transaction completed.\nI am pleased to get your opinion about the preparation of the second paper and I\nshall proceed with this matter. Unless I have serious interruptions, I hope to get a\npreliminary copy of it in your hands before you sail. Perhaps, I had better write Dr.\nFlinn that I am preparing the second paper and ask him whether he has any experimental\ndata which he would like to have in my hands, and which he would like to have go into\nthe paper. This experiment on determining and testing the activity of the offspring\nis very interesting indeed. This question of transfer of radium to the offspring has\nbeen asked me sseveral times, and I have always been obliged to answer that no experi-\nmental data are available. It seems to me that this experiment of Dr. Flinn's should\nbe extended to the children of Mrs. McDonald. You will recall that Mrs. Metz is but\nslightly radioactive, but Mrs. Tuck is about as active as Mrs. McDonald.\nI shall write to Dr. James Ewing as you suggest. It seems that the experimental\ndata which we obtained as the result of the hospitalization of Mrs. Hussman and Miss\nFryer do not give any evidence of an increase in the radium elimination from the use\nof parathyromon, but I have recently discuesed the matter with an expert from the\nMayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, and he is strongly of the opinion that this treat-\nment should be continued over a period of three to six weeks in order to get positive\nindication.\nIt seems to me that all of this work on the detection and estimation of radium,\nwhich we may be doing more or less separately in that it is done in different labora-\ntories, still might well be looked upon as cooperative eriments, for I feel that\nby cooperation we shall make much better progress of the problem than by working indi-\nvidually. Surely, by working in a cooperative spirit, we will all feel far more free\nin expressing our ideas and offering suggestions which will lead to new experiments,\nand I hope that Dr. Flinn will feel this way about the project.
