Barker,\nUnited States Radium Corporation,\n535 Pearl Street,\nNew York, N. Y.\nMy dear Barker:\nI have your letter of June 13th. You are quite right\nabout Madam Curie being pestered with tourists and refusing to see any\nnot properly introduced. I do not blame her under the circumstances.\nI have seen many letters written to her from this country and you would\nbe surprised at the kindness and courtesy she shows in dealing with them.\nA number of times she has asked me what she should do in certain cases.\nI hope that you will have a very pleasant trip and I am\nsure that both you and your wife will greatly enjoy it.\nYou may or may not get the same impression that I got in\nconnection with the Belgian Company. Personally, I did not like their\nattitude. Lechien told me last summer that they were out to put any other\ncompany out of business who attempted to make radium and they would cut\ntheir price to anything in order to do this. Also, they are extremely\nindependent both as regards receiving visitors and showing them anything.\nHe was polite to me last summer but nothing more.\nIt is my understanding that they have put you in rather a\ndifficult position as regards eliminating mesothorium or nogetting any\nradium. You will see a letter from me in the next number of the Journal of\nIndustrial and Engineering Chemistry and also an editorial by Howe. This\ndoes not involve your company in any way but we propose to make the Belgian\nCompany sit up and take notice. If we hear anything more concerning the\n\"trust\" attitude they are liable to get a good deal more both in this country\nand in the journals abroad. They have the complete monopoly of radium but I\nsee no reason why they should also control the mesothorium market and any\nattempt of this kind is going to receive some very sharp criticism.\nI enclose a letter to Madam Curie which I believe will be of\nuse to you. She and her daughters go away to the seashore in the summer so\nthat you may find them out of Paris. My advice to you is to send my letter\non to them as soon as you reach England so as to find out whether they are\nor are not in Paris.\nSincerely yours,\nRBM*JR\nR. B.
