care to do anything at this time which might reflect unfavorably upon such a
program. Should this come to pass and the matter be cleaned up, I believe
that we would be in a much better position to discuss the matter of publication
of this article with the Committee.
Pretaining to the authorship of this work: I believe that both
Dr. Flinn and the members of our Committee would be better satisfied should
the data regarding the Dunn and Dumschott cases be published with Dr. Flinn
as the author or co-author, while that on the two cases - namely, Miss Fryer
and Mrs. Hussman should be published as a joint paper by you and Dr. Fialla.
It is extremely unfortunate that Dr. Flinn has not seen fit to accept
our offer to cooperate with him in making more extensive radio-active deter-
minations of the excreta of the cases he has studied, for had he accepted our
offer and we had proceeded to collect a complete series of data, Dr. Flinn
would be in a position to make a real contribution in this field. However, he
apparently does not elect to do this and, as I previously advised, I don't
believe we can do any more than we have to work out the problem along this
line. On soveral occasions I have urged Dr. Flinn to systematically collect
the excreta of the cases he has had, but as I recall it, the only samples
submitted were those of the Dunn case very early in this work. Dr. Flinn's
contributions to this field, as I look over the situation, seem to be in a
story form rather than scientific in nature in that it does not present
scientific data.
It would, therefore, seem that the matter of publishing this
article resolves itself down to the basis that we should defer samo at this
time, and consider a little further the exact way in which we should proceed
at a later date.
On your next visit to New York we can have an opportunity to discuss
this, and you in turn can talk with both Dr. Flinn and Dr. Fialla regarding
their foolings on the matter and, probably arrive at something which will be
far more satisfactory than we could by correspondence.
Sincerely yours,
Vice President.
