Dr. Herman Schlundt,
University of lissouri,
Columbia, Mo.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
I an enclosing herewith copies of correspondence with
lir. Urie, Director of Research at the Elgin National Watch Co., which are
quite explanatory.
As you are aware the Elgin National Watch Company are the
one large user of luminous material who are disposed to discontinue the use
of this, material, provided they can get the other watch companies todo the same
also, as well as preventing the importation of luminous dials. You will
récall their representative, Mr. Stringor, at the conference in Bashington
last,December and how very unsatisfactory his attitude was. We hardly
feel that Mr. Stringer's attitude is typical of what is to be found among
the Directors of the Elgin National Watch Co., although we have had several
echoes from their officials that they are disposed to follow the lines indicat-
ed by Mr. Stringer. We feel that their attitude is largely due to a lack of
complete information on this subject, as well as becoming unduly alarmed over
something which is new to them.
They have always been prone to have their employees examin-
ed electroscopically which undoubtedly accounts in a measure for their
attitude. lie have on several occasions andeavored to interest these people
in making such tests, but they have not allowed us to succeed in getting very
far. lir. Urie's letter of June 25th, was the first real indication that we
have had that they were disposed to undertake this phase of the work and, it
is our hope that by following this up, as indicated in the correspondence,
it may be possible for us to get then started.
I have been very presumptuous in indicating your readiness
to assist in this work and, I hope that your interest in the problem will
be sufficient to undertake this task, should they be disposed to ask your
cooperation. My letter is so written that it is left indefinite as to
whether
they will make arrangements thru us or write you directly and, I am
therefore, sending you copies of the correspondence so that you may be fully
posted as to what the situation is.
Regarding the expenses involved in connection with this
work, please be advised that the U.S.R.Co., will reimburse you for all expenses
and fees for this work. We would ask that you do not divulge this fact to the
Elgin National Watch Co., but assume the attitude indicated in my letter to
Mr. Urie, of August 28th.
I presume that you have at the University emanation
