Re: Radium.
Claim of Mrs. Hoare ( Maiden name,
Frances Tappan),
Chas. Stockdell Gray, Esq.,
Counsel, Globe Indemni ty Co.,
20 Washington Place,
Newark, N. J.
Dear Mr. Gray:
Please be advised that I had a conference
today at two P. M. with Mr. H. H. Barker, Vice President of
the United States Radium Company, at which time he called
to our attention the above claim. Mr. Edwin F. Smith, rep-
resenting the New Amsterdam Casual ty Company, was also
present, but apparently this case arose only during your
coverage. As I understand it, your policy ran from November
4, 1916 to November 4, 1917. Mrs. Hoare is represen ted by
Arthur M. Karl of the Military Park Building, Newark, N. J.
A copy of his letter to the United States Radium Corporation
dated the 15th instant is herewith enclosed for your file.
You will note from that letter that Mrs. Hoare claims that
she was employed by the United States Radium Company from
sometime during the latter half of the year 1916 to possibly
on or about the first of January 1917 or a few months there-
after. The Radium Company according to its records, has
no record of this woman. Its only record would probably be
an employment card or a cancelled check. However, the em-
ployment records are in bad condition and the fact that no
card shows up would not mean that she was not an employee.
The Company is still to check its cancelled checks. Possibly
in that way they might find some record of this woman.
As you know, Dr. Frederick B. Flinn of
connection with the injury to girls and because of his
Columbia University has made a thorgu study in
wide knowledge and experience the attorney, Mr. Karl, brought
Mrs. Hoare to Dr. Flinn for the purpose of having him advise,
first, whether the girl was radioactive; second, what treatment
she should have if she was. Dr. Flinn has called the matter
to the attention of the United States Radium Corporation, who
in turn have called the matter to our attention. Dr. Flinn
