April 11th,1930. Dr. Herman Schlundt, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. Dear Dr. Schlundt: I have today wired you giving you results of my test upon the samples of ore sent from Winnemucca by Mr. Lee. For fear that the telegram may have been somewhat garbled I repeat my findings: Samples 1-X and 1-2 contain approximately 14% U3O8. Samples 2-A and 2-B contain approximately 12%, while sample from claim #4 showed 2% only. There was one rather odd fact which I found with reference to all of these samples, with the exception of #4, and that is that during the first few moment that the samples were in the alpha ray electroscope the rate of the leafe increased quite materially, but as I stated in my wire I based my computation upon the maximum value or the most rapid fall of the leaf. These samples of ore are quite different in their physical appearance from the sample that was submitted to us by Mr. Luber, and while I have not had an opportunity to make a very extensive study, still I do know that they are very resistant to chemical treatment. I imagine the processing of this ore for recovering of the radium might present a rather complicated problem, and one which would be costly. I shall await your results with interest to see whether or not they check my findings. I am running an emanation determination either tomorrow or Monday, which will give me informa- tion as to whether or not the alpha ray test on these ores represent the true radium content. From the nature of the ore I rather feel that we will not find a condition applying here which I find in the case of the Luber sample - that is that the radium content was some 5 or 6 times that indicated by the alpha ray examination. I must apologize for not having sent you the speci- men of zinc sulphide, but am glad to state that same is going forward under separate cover today. You will not find this specimen any too free from alpha radiation, for it has been stored around our place here as well as the place where it was manufactured, the both of which are more or less radio-active. Sincerely yours, Vice President. HHBakker:RH
