Dr. Herman Schlundt,
University of "issouri,
Columbia, No.
Dear Dr. Schlundt:
Your wire of last night has arrived, and upon
checking my samples I find that they are not active, and I have
also found wherein the trouble lies.
In changing our laboratories around a good
part of our equipment was more or less confused - we have two
agatemortors, one which we use for pulverizing ore samples only,
while the other is used for grinding higher grade materials.
I was under the impression that I was using the one which had been
set aside for ore samples, but upon looking over my equipment this
morning I find that I used the one which had been used on low grade
sulphates. While I almays make a practide of grinding a small
amount of the sample and discarding it before grinding the samples
to be tested, still this procedure apparently did not thoroughly
cleanse the mortor and pestle.
I am certainly glad that Mr. Lee sent you dup-
licate samples and that this matter has been straightened out so
promptly, although I am confident that I would have caught the
error today, for I am running an emanation deternination on these
samples.
I am enclosing herewith a small specimen of the
ore sample, which Mr. Luber gave us, for test which you will recall
ban around 65% 0308 by the Ledoux analysis - 200 milligrams of
radium element per ton by the emanation determination and the
equivalent of around 12% 0308 by the alpha ray determination.
I have made examination of this sample under the microscope and am
inclined to believe that it is a doctored sample. I would be
glad
to have your opinion on this subject.
Sincerely yours,
Vice President.
