April 15th,1930. Dr. Herman Schlundt, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. Dear Dr. Schlundt: Just a line to advise you that your air mail letter, postmarked April 13th, 3 P.M., was delivered to us at 10:30 this morning, April 15th. The time consumed therefore being approximately 435 hours, while the time consumed for my air mail letter, postmarked April llth, 7 P.U. was only 22 hours. There is apparently a difference here which is quite impossible to explain. In order to verify the time of delivery of air mail vs regular mail, you might check the time which this letter is receifed to compare the time consumed for air mail and regular mail. It is possible that your letter was mailed at a time when it had to 1dy in the Columbia post office nearly 24 hours before going out. Fortunately we here in New York have two air mail collections daily, while you probably have only one. The discrepancy with regard to the samples seems to be quite well cleared up and we are in accord. Yesterday I received additional samples from Mr. Lee, and I find none of them to be radioactive. I don't believe that these samples were tampered with. I have often found that a lump will give a greater discharge in the electroscope than the ground sample from the some lump, but this I ascribe to the fact that when you introduce a lump into the electroscope you shorten the distance between the plate and the electro, thereby increasing the capacity. The ore samples which you forwarded were received yesterday, Monday the 14th. Sincerely yours, HRBarker:RH Vice President.
