UNIVERSITY OF missouri COLUMBIA SEP 291930 September 25, 1930 DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY Mr. H. H. Barker United States Radium Corporation 535 Pearl Street New York City, New York My dear Barker: At the time I wrote you concerning the re- examination of Mrs. Metz for radioactivity I also wrote to Dr. Flinn and Mr. Markley. In reply I have received a letter from Dr. Flinn in which he states that he feels that our second examination of Mrs. Metz was so definitely negative that he is very much inclined to make the state- ment that Mrs. Metz is not radioactive. But he stands quite ready to make an expired air test provided arrange- ments for it can be made. I think that this is the far safer plan and I hope that the arrangements can be made. If the expired air test turns out negative, as I feel quite confident it will, I, for my part, shall be very glad to approve the finding of Dr. Flinn. Should a definite indication of activity ap- pear by the expired air test, then I hope that the increase of activity during the first three hours will be carefully noted, for any initial increase in activity over the natural drift may be accidental at times. But, if a distinct in- crease in activity is observed corresponding to the normal increase due to the presence of radio emanation, that will be conclusive evidence. I hope that I may not be called upon to participate in this expired air test. I certainly shall be pleased if this matter can be settled in this way. Sincerely yours, Herman Schlundt Herman Schlundt HS:AS
