DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY
CORNELL UNIVERSITY medical COLLEGE
FIRST AVENUE AND 28TH STREET
NEW YORK
September 30, 1930.
Mr. H.H. Barker,
U. S. Radium Corporation,
535 Pearl Street
OCT 1930
New York City.
My dear Mr. Barker:
As soon as I returned from the West I gave
your last letter to Craver, regarding Miss Shaub, and advised
him to go to see her. This he did last Saturday in conference
with Dr. Humphries.
Dr. Craver finds that Miss Shaub is suffering
from a well advanced osteogenic sarcoma of the lower end of the
femur in which a pathological fracture has occurred. In
Dr. Humphries letter to me, about August 15th, he said nothing
about a sarcoma but merely mentioned the fracture. The general
condition of this patient is poor and we suspect that the lungs
are involved and that the progress of the disease will be as
usual.
Dr. Craver suggested that the patient be
brought to the Memorial Hospital for treatment, but since she
is in poor condition, this will be rather difficult to
accomplish.
Dr. Humphries thinks the radiation treatment
which we advise can be carried out in her present location.
I do not think there is anything more that
the Commission can do in this case. Radiation treatment can only
give some temporary palliative relief, but it cannot alter the
course of the disease.
January Sincerely yours,
James Ewing.
