OUTLINE OF TREATMENT
1.
Collect stools and urine separately for a 3-day period
before beginning treatment.
(Three day's collection of stools may be lumped together;
also the three day's collection of urine.)
2.
For 3 weeks, with patient on a low calcium diet, (excluding milk
and green vegetables and giving meat freely)
Inject parahormone (LILLY) intramuscularly every other day,
beginning with 10 Units and gradually increasing to 50
Units.
Blood calcium should be determined before beginning injections
and at frequent intervals during the 3 week's oriod of in-
jections: in the beginning, at least, preferably before each
injection, to avoid too grest 8 degree of hypercalcemia.
(Caution should be observed when blood calcium level
reaches neighborhood of 15 or 16 Mgm.% - Normal 10-
11 Mgm.9 )
No serious results of hypercalcemia in man: in dogs, death may be
caused by parathermone vomiting.convulsions - coma (see Collip)
3.
At endoof 3 week period of injections (during last 3 days )
again collect separate 3-day collection of all stools and
- 2 -
all urine.
4.
For second 3 weeks stop parathormone and give patients
a high calcium diet - milk Grade A,1 to 2 ouarts a day,
plenty of green vegetables.
Calcium lactate Grs.XX.t.i.d.
Viosterol (Meade Johnson(s ) gtts.V.y.i.d. increasing to
gtts. X.t.i.d.daily.
Encourage them during this eriod to obtain as mouh
direct, unfiltered sunshine exposure of whole body as
possible.
5.
Third collection of stools and urine for 3-day period
at end of second 3 weeks.
6.
Repeat 3 week period of parathormone and low calcium
diet. It may be possible this time to begin with 40
units. Probably unwise to exceed maximum of 50 units.
7.
During last 3 days of this third 3-week period, collect
stools and urine
8.
Fourth 3-week period ,stop parathormone, go back to
high calcium diet, and viosterol gtts.X.t.i.d.
9.
During last 3 days collect stools and urine
Stools and urines to be forwarded to
