UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY March 20th, 1931. Mr. H. H. Barker Unisted States Radium Corporation 535 Pearl Street New York City, New York MAR 23 1931 My dear Barker: Mr. Horace Thomas, the boy who is planning to study the effects of radium on animals, was in this morning to tell me that he was indeed obliged to you for sending the compilation of literature. He is going over this carefully and he thinks it will take him about a week longer. I hope that you can spare the book for another week. He will be ready to undertake experiments soon. The cages for the ani- mals are now being made. I think he expects to start out with experiments on rats. Naturally, some experiments must first be conducted to get an orientation on the doses of ra- dium to be administered. To begin with, then, I hope that you will be good enough to send on about 20, 5-microgram am- poules. We may wish to try some experiments with 1 and 2- microgram ampoules, but I have some of those on hand from the lot which we used in calibrating the gamma ray electroscope. physiological saline or are they distilled water samples? What I wish to ask is this: are these samples made up as the &2 ug, My determinations of radium on the feces and urine residues of the three girls are drawing to a close. I have about fifteen more samples to boil off; SO within a week you may expect a preliminary report, that is, if all goes well. I assume, of course, that Craver and his associ- ates in this experiment of radium elimination will wish to publish these results. I trust that they will not take the attitude once taken by Dr. Flinn, namely, that those who made the radium determinations are simply serving as analysts and are thus not entitled to any joint authorship. Have you seen a new book by Rutherford, Chadwick and Ellis, entitled, "The Radiations from Radioactive Substances"? I hope you are pondering about the question of attending the meeting at Indianapolis. With very good wishes, I remain, Yours sincerely, Herman Schlundt Herman Schlundt. hs.as
