Barker\nUnited States Radium Corporation\n535 Pearl Street\nNew York City, New York\nMy dear Howard:\nYour letter reporting your meeting with Dr.\nEwing and Dr. Craver I read with considerable interest and I\nshall try to write Dr. Craver in the near future. Craver has\nnot replied as yet to my letter which accompanied the data on\nthe radium content of the excreta. I expect some comment on\nthis report from him very soon. I really regret that Dr. Failla\nhas lost interest in the gamma ray and expired air methods of\nafter all it is is the change activity as\ndetermining radium content of living persons. At this time it\nwould be especially desirable to measure the activity of the\nresult of treatment in which we are\ngirls who have been under Dr. Craver's treatment and I hope that\nDr. Failla can be persuaded to do this. I should be very much\ninterest this exht\nsurprised if the activity of these girls has materially changed\nsince the time when we last made measurements on them.\nI am especially pleased with Dr. Ewing's attitude\nwith reference to the matter of publication and in my letter to\nDr. Craver I shall suggest that we proceed to publish at an\nearly date.\nI have been away for nearly a week attending the\nspring meeting of the American Electrochemical Society held in\nBirmingham. I saw a good many Missourians who have migrated\nto the South and had a very good time. Dr. Lind, however, did\nnot attend the meeting and it fell to my lot to present the\ntwo papers for which he was scheduled.\nAbout two weeks ago we finally received our Wolf-\nHess gamma ray machine. It is an instrument with very low\nnatural drift. We get a fall of about two small divisions in\n50 minutes which is a little better than the instrument that was\nused by Mr. Knowles in his work. As a result of some tests made\non two of my students who are engaged in the refining laboratory\nI feel confident that the presence of one microgram of radium in\na living person can be detected with certainty by means of this\nnew electroscope. We shall be able to use this instrument for\ndetermining the radium content of residues and feces in the ani-\nmal experiments now under way. When a standard of 1/10 of a\nmicrogram of radium is strapped to the case of the instrument\na very marked increase in drift is observed and a standard of only\n1/100 of a microgram still produces a slight but distinct increase\nin drift.\nWith very good wishes, I remain,\nSincerely yours,\nHerman Schlundt\nhs.as\nHerman Schlundt."
