UNIVERSITY OF missouri COLUMBIA MAY 1 1931 DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY May 7th, 1931. Mr. H. H. Barker United States Radium Corporation 535 Pearl Street New York City, New York My dear Barker: I am interested indeed in the experiments conducted at the Elgin State Hospital through the inter- est of Dr. John and Mr. Armstrong in the administering of radium chloride internally and I am very much obliged to you for bringing to our attention the work of Le Blanc. I shall bring these two papers to the attention of Mr. Thomas; he probably has not seen these publications but he is very alert and is watching the current literature. With regard to the electroscopic tests of patients who are in the Elgin State Hospital, let me say right here that I must beg your pardon for not having re- plied to this part of your letter, in fact, I had for- gotten all about it. It was evidently displaced by the attention I had to give to other matters and it had slipped my mind entirely. It seems to me that the making of routine gamma ray tests on living persons could easily be entrusted to someone who has not had very much train- ing in radioactivity as long as he has available one of these Wulf-Hess instruments. The only danger I see is that such a person might not be very careful in prevent- ing contamination of the instrument, not on the inside, of course, but on the outside, by carelessly, through lack of knowledge, spilling some of the radium solution which is being used for the patients, on the instrument; or by getting his hands in the solution and then charging the electroscope. A little caution on this point ought to protect the instrument fully. It seems to me that the value of these measurements would lie in the regularity with which they were made. We are now extending our tests for radioac- tivity to a number of persons who have been employed in the building where we have the refining laboratory, to see to what extent they have become radioactive. Sincerely yours, Herman Schlundt Herman Schlundt. hs.as
